phantomdata on “Do I Want to Learn Java?”
Sunday, May 27th, 2007@posure; The whole outsourcing thing is totally relevant precisely because companies don't care about quality code. Take my recent Dell Vista Express Upgrade that took four to five months to develop. One of the very first things it did was bomb out after a forced BIOS flash. I don't think a basic upgrade-prepper bombing out on hardware that /your company/ built is considered "quality".
I do agree with AdamFortuna. If you want to work for a Fortune 500 you need to know COBOL, Java, ColdFusion and Table-Based HTML design. The question is, do you want to work with an archaic system or do you want to work with something that will help you get what you want done faster, cleaner and more easily maintained? Do you want to be a cog in the corporate wheel or do you want to go out into the world and change it?
Either way, don't take our words for it. Learn a bit of it. Sun's got some good(?) docs on Java that'll hold your hand through the beginning stages.
Also, please don't misinterpret that I'm saying "you shouldn't learn the fundamentals". I don't agree that Java is a fundamental. Learning something like C, ASM or C++ will do worlds to opening your eyes to what's going on inside the machine.

Sunday, May 27th, 2007I know what the answer is, but I still feel compelled to ask what the f*cking deal is with Microsoft all of a sudden wanting to act ethical, and point out the morally incredulous things OTHER companies are doing.
Once again, I know the answer, it's just hilarious.

Sunday, May 27th, 2007In the past few months we see the actions of Microsoft and Oracle in engaging business on Linux. Microsoft made a deal with Novell that will allow Microsoft to re-distributed SUSE Linux. Oracle used Red Hat Enterprise Linux and renamed it to Oracle Enterprise Linux and provide Oracle Unbreakable Linux Support.
What are your thoughts about this Linux engagements?

Sunday, May 27th, 2007FOSS violated 235 patents accoding to Microsoft. After this Novell and Microsoft had an agreement on allowing Microsoft in redistributing SUSE Linux. Microsoft demanded royalties to all open source software users for these patent violations. There is a thought that this actions made by Microsoft will make companies nervous of being target of lawsuit and shift from other Linux distribution to Novell SUSE Linux.
What do you think? Is there a plan behind Microsoft's actions?
